The first records of the English term “coach” date back to 1830, when it was used by those who lived at Oxford University to refer to those who helped a student prepare for an exam.

Later the word “coaching” was coined to encompass the different activities, tools, etc., that seek to develop and enhance the capabilities present in each individual to take them from point A of their current situation to point B where they want to be. This process is guided by a tutor or “coach” and executed by a pupil “coachee”.

Yes, it is a scientifically based methodology. Coaching has been applied in different areas of work and performance, from education and sports to personal and business. It has also acquired a variety of influences from different scientific fields such as psychology, pedagogy, among others. 

Since the mid 90’s it has been developed as a discipline regulated by different professional associations worldwide, such as the Spanish Coaching Association (ASESCO) or the International Coaching Federation (ICF).

Executive coaching focuses on business behavior, personal development and interpersonal skills, such as communication and expectation setting.

Coaching is not a substitute for psychotherapy, although it may indicate the need for it.

Coaching involves a process of change and personal and professional growth on the part of a coachee, who is the protagonist and responsible for his process of change to achieve his goals. While being accompanied and guided by a coach.

On the other hand, mentoring is established between a Junior protégé and a Senior mentor who shares his knowledge and specific experience in the same area or career that his protégé seeks to develop.

Anyone in the organization can participate, however, our recommendation is to gather a sizeable group of employees or select a group of key employees to increase the reach of the program and generate greater commitment.
